Smithville scores top 100 national recognition

ELLETTSVILLE, Indiana – Broadband Communities magazine recognized Smithville in 2025 as a national top 100 fiber broadband provider, marking the company’s 17th consecutive national honor. The recognition places the 103-year-old Indiana company alongside industry giants like Google Fiber, AT&T, and Starlink for its work in expanding rural broadband and transforming local economies.

Quarter of a billion dollars in private investments

“Smithville has invested upwards of $250 million to build and upgrade its fiber network, deploying more than 3,000 miles of fiber across Indiana alone,” said Brad Randall, editor of Broadband Communities. “The company’s recent network upgrades are particularly impressive—their infrastructure now supports connectivity ranging from 1 Gbps to 100 Gbps, with capacity to scale to 200 Gbps in the future.”

Randall noted that the companies chosen for the national honor bring “new energy to the telecom sector” and have demonstrated a strategic capacity for “accelerating builds, sparking new partnerships, and reshaping the competitive landscape in 2025.” To be considered for the national honor, Smithville had to demonstrate its capacity for “driving innovation, expanding connectivity, or delivering essential solutions in the broadband and telecom space,” he said.

Smithville’s network serves government agencies, nonprofits, defense contractors, Fortune 50 companies, and small businesses throughout Indiana. The company operates 100-gigabit capacity nodes in Columbus, Ellettsville, Evansville, Jasper, and the WestGate@Crane Technology Park, a major hub for national security and research innovation near Purdue Research Park.

Now online – second 100-gigabit fiber Chicago hub connection

Recent technology expansions include a second 100-gigabit fiber link connecting to Chicago data centers and extended gigabit-level capacity in Greene County, where a planned $600 million National Security Industrial Hub will anchor future high-tech growth in the defense sector.

Beyond its infrastructure achievements, Smithville’s top 100 status includes earned recognition for community initiatives like tech-enabled child safety protections, telehealth support in rural areas, and a new Learning and Development program designed to attract and cultivate top talent. The company’s Bright Communities initiative demonstrates how high-speed connectivity improves quality of life for Indiana residents.

Founded over a century ago, Smithville continues to expand its fiber network through its Smithville At Home and Smithville At Work service divisions, providing enterprise-level connectivity, data consulting, and network management services to businesses, universities, healthcare providers, and government offices.
